From Pinkerton to Biotech Pioneer
January marks National Biotechnology Month, a time to celebrate the advancements and contributions of biotechnology to society. It鈥檚 also the perfect opportunity to shine a spotlight on one of our outstanding biotechnology students, Monique Gingras '24, a graduate of 樱花动漫 Manchester's biotechnology major who is continuing her education in our master鈥檚 degree program in biotechnology: industrial and biomedical sciences.
After graduating from Pinkerton Academy in 2020, Monique鈥檚 path to 樱花动漫 Manchester began with a desire for a close-knit community and hands-on opportunities that would set her up for success in the biotech field.
鈥淚 originally had no idea what college or university I wanted to attend,鈥 she says. 鈥淏ut after learning about the Millyard Scholars Program and feeling the sense of community during my tour, I knew 樱花动漫 Manchester was the right fit for me.鈥
Life in the Lab
During her undergraduate years at 樱花动漫 Manchester, Monique immersed herself in a range of experiential learning opportunities that prepared her for a career in biotechnology. As a researcher with NH EPSCoR, she cultured neural progenitor cells, encapsulated neurospheres through bioprinting and presented her findings at prestigious conferences like the ASCB Cell Bio Meeting. She also gained industry experience through her immunology co-op at Merck, where she optimized ELISA protocols and executed cell-based assays to support product development.
Monique credits the Millyard Scholars Program with opening doors to these transformative experiences.
鈥淲ithout the Millyard Scholars program, I wouldn鈥檛 have had access to opportunities like working in the Biotechnology Innovation Center or participating in Lyme disease research,鈥 she says. 鈥淭hese experiences have changed my life and broadened my career possibilities.鈥
Passion Meets Purpose
Monique鈥檚 passion for biotechnology stems from her interest in mental health treatments and their varied effects on individuals. Originally considering psychology, she pivoted to biotechnology for its broader career opportunities and immediate industry applications.
鈥淚鈥檝e always been fascinated by why medications for mental health disorders can have such different effects on people,鈥 Monique says. 鈥淏iotechnology allows me to explore these questions while also opening doors to research and medical careers.鈥
Community and Collaboration
One of the most rewarding aspects of Monique鈥檚 time at 樱花动漫 Manchester has been the sense of community among her peers and professors.
"Not only do I get to connect more with my classmates due to smaller class sizes, but I also get to have a more personal relationship with my professors," she says. 鈥淭he support and collaboration I鈥檝e experienced have made my college journey truly special.鈥
Her involvement in the Lyme disease research project, led by fellow Millyard Scholar alum Fardeen Siddiqui '22, exemplifies this collaborative spirit. The project aims to explore the potential of bacteriophages found in ticks to treat Lyme disease.
鈥淟yme disease currently has no cure, so finding innovative treatments is incredibly important,鈥 Monique says. 鈥淚 love learning new techniques and contributing to research that could make a real difference.鈥
Advice for Future Wildcats
For students considering 樱花动漫 Manchester, Monique鈥檚 advice is clear: think about what you want out of your college experience.
"If you value smaller class sizes, a close-knit community and professors who truly care about your success, 樱花动漫 Manchester is the place for you,鈥 she says.
As Monique continues her journey in biotechnology as a graduate student, she remains a shining example of what Pinkerton Academy alumni can achieve at 樱花动漫 Manchester. Her story is a testament to the power of experiential learning, collaboration and community鈥攙alues that define our campus and inspire the next generation of biotech leaders.
